Medical doctors here at The Foot Institute – Airdrie specialize in the medical and surgical treatment of the ankle and foot. Our podiatrists invest an average of a decade in education, the first 4 years in undergraduate studies to obtain a Bachelors Degree, and the next 4 years in Medical School to secure a Podiatric Medical Degree. Podiatric Medical School is similar to conventional medical school and in fact many podiatry training programs are located within these academic institutions. Upon receiving a Podiatric Medial Degree, Doctors at the Foot Institute undertake a hospital "internship" or residency for yet another 1 to 3 years.
At the fulfillment of the internship or residency, our Podiatrists have received considerable healthcare education with an emphasis on problems regarding the feet and ankles. They are studied to care for conditions varying from typical ailments such as ingrown and fungal toe nails, to those which are much more sophisticated including clubfoot, bunions, or reconstructive surgery of the foot. Our physicians have considerable surgical training which furnish them the prior experience necessary to execute surgery on those problems that are best managed through surgical intervention.
Foot Institute Doctors also have a comprehensive practical knowledge and understanding of biomechanics, which is the study of the forces which the legs and feet endure as we walk, run or carry out other activities. Understanding biomechanics and gait problems empowers a Podiatrist to design shoes and orthotics that can bestow pain relief and defend against a large number of problems which the feet generally experience.
