Physicians here at The Foot Institute – Airdrie specialise in the medical and surgical treatment of the foot and ankle. Foot Institute Doctors spend about ten years in higher education, the first 4 years in undergrad studies to attain a Bachelors Degree, and the next four years in Medical School to obtain a Podiatric Medical Degree. Podiatric Medical School is similar to general medical school and in fact numerous podiatry programs lie within these academic institutions. After attaining a Podiatric Medial Degree, Doctors at the Foot Institute complete a hospital "internship" or post degree residency for an additional one to three years.
Upon the fulfillment of the internship or residency, our Doctors have obtained extensive health care training with a main focus on complications involving the feet and ankles. They are trained to address concerns stretching from commonplace disorders for instance ingrown and fungal toenails, to those which are even more intricate for example, clubfoot, bunions, or reconstructive surgery of the foot. Doctors at the Foot Institute have extensive surgical education which give them the expertise essential to perform surgery on those issues that are best remedied through surgical treatment.
Our Doctors also have a comprehensive expertise and understanding of biomechanics, which is the study of the forces which the feet and legs endure as we walk, run or perform other activities. Having knowledge of biomechanics and gait irregularities allows a Podiatrist to develop footwear and orthotics which can give pain relief and protect against a large number of issues which the feet routinely encounter.
