Specialists at The Foot Institute – Airdrie concentrate on the medical and surgical treatment of the foot and ankle. They put in approximately a decade in education, the first four years in undergrad studies to secure a Bachelors Degree, and the second 4 years in Medical School to have a Podiatric Medical Degree. Podiatric Medical School is similar to standard medical school and in fact several podiatry training programs are contained within these institutions. After achieving a Podiatric Medial Degree, Physicians at the Foot Institute carry out a hospital "internship" or residency for another one to three years.
Upon the finalization of the internship or residency, our Podiatrists have obtained comprehensive medical education with a main focus on issues regarding the ankles and feet. Our Doctors are qualified to address problems varying from general problems such as fungal and ingrown toenails, to those which are much more sophisticated including clubfoot, bunions, or reconstructive surgery of the foot. Our Doctors have considerable surgical education which supply them the skill crucial to execute surgery on those troubles that are best remedied through surgical intervention.
Foot Institute Doctors also have an extensive practical knowledge and understanding of biomechanics, which is the study of the forces which the feet and legs go through as we walk, run or perform other activities. Knowing biomechanics and gait irregularities allows a Podiatrist to design shoes and orthotics which can give pain relief and protect against a large number of problems which the feet commonly encounter.
