Specialists here at The Foot Institute – Airdrie focus on the surgical and medical treatment of the foot and ankle. Our podiatrists put in approximately ten years in higher education, the first four years in undergraduate studies to receive a Bachelors Degree, and the second 4 years in Medical School to acquire a Podiatric Medical Degree. Podiatric Medical School corresponds to conventional medical school and in point of fact several podiatry programmes are contained within these schools. Upon attaining a Podiatric Medial Degree, Doctors at the Foot Institute complete a hospital "internship" or residency for another one to three years.
At the completion of the internship or post degree residency, our Podiatric physicians have received wide-ranging medical training with a stress on issues involving the ankles and feet. Our Doctors are trained to treat conditions ranging from general afflictions such as fungal and ingrown toenails, to those which are a lot more intricate such as clubfoot, bunions, or reconstructive surgery of the foot. Our physicians have substantial surgical education which give them the experience necessary to perform surgical treatment on those problems that are best handled through surgical treatment.
Our Doctors also have a thorough expertise and understanding of biomechanics, which is the study of the forces which the legs and feet receive as we walk, run or carry out other tasks. Knowing biomechanics and gait irregularities empowers a Podiatric doctor to create shoes and orthotics which can deliver pain relief and help prevent many complications which the feet commonly experience.
