Health professionals here at The Foot Institute – Airdrie specialize in the surgical and medical therapy of the foot and ankle. Our podiatrists spend approximately 10 years in education, the first 4 years in undergraduate studies to secure a Bachelors Degree, and the second four years in Medical School to acquire a Podiatric Medical Degree. Podiatric Medical School is similar to traditional medical school and in point of fact numerous podiatry training programs are located within these academic institutions. After attaining a Podiatric Medial Degree, Podiatrists at the Foot Institute undertake a hospital "internship" or residency for an additional one to three years.
At the finalization of the internship or post degree residency, our Foot doctors have received wide-ranging health care training with an emphasis on issues pertaining to the feet and ankles. They are educated to care for problems ranging from commonplace problems for instance fungal and ingrown toe nails, to those which are even more complicated for example clubfoot, bunions, or reconstructive surgery of the foot. Our physicians have comprehensive surgical education which provide them the practical experience essential to carry out surgical treatment on those complications that are best treated through surgical intervention.
Our Doctors also have an extensive practical knowledge and understanding of biomechanics, which is the study of the forces which the feet and legs endure as we walk, run or perform other activities. Realizing biomechanics and gait problems enables a Podiatric physician to design footwear and orthotics that can provide pain relief and avoid numerous complications which the feet usually experience.
