Medical professionals at The Foot Institute – Airdrie specialize in the medical and surgical therapy of the ankle and foot. Our doctors spend an average of 10 years in learning, the first four years in undergraduate studies to acquire a Bachelors Degree, and the second four years in Medical School to receive a Podiatric Medical Degree. Podiatric Medical School is similar to conventional medical school and in point of fact a number of podiatry training programs are located within these academic institutions. After obtaining a Podiatric Medial Degree, Doctors at the Foot Institute undertake a hospital "internship" or post degree residency for an additional one to three years.
At the completion of the internship or residency, our Doctors have obtained significant medical training with an emphasis on problems pertaining to the ankles and feet. Our Doctors are qualified to treat complications ranging from typical afflictions for example, ingrown and fungal toe nails, to those which are much more challenging for example, clubfoot, bunions, or reconstructive surgery of the foot. Our Doctors have substantial surgical education which provide them the prior experience needed to conduct surgery on those conditions that are best treated through surgical intervention.
Our Doctors furthermore have a comprehensive expertise and understanding of biomechanics, which is the study of the forces which the legs and feet undergo as we walk, run or perform other activities. Recognizing biomechanics and gait problems allows a Podiatric doctor to design footwear and orthotics that can deliver pain relief and reduce the chances of many conditions which the feet normally encounter.
