Medical professionals here at The Foot Institute – Airdrie concentrate on the surgical and medical treatment of the ankle and foot. Our podiatrists invest approximately ten years in education, the first 4 years in undergraduate studies to achieve a Bachelors Degree, and the second 4 years in Medical School to get a Podiatric Medical Degree. Podiatric Medical School resembles typical medical school and several podiatry training programs are located inside these schools. Upon receiving a Podiatric Medial Degree, Podiatrists at the Foot Institute perform a hospital "internship" or residency for an additional one to three years.
At the completion of the internship or residency, our Podiatrists have received substantial health care education with a concentration on complications involving the feet and ankles. Our Doctors are skilled to manage problems stretching from basic afflictions for instance ingrown and fungal toenails, to those which are much more complicated such as clubfoot, bunions, or reconstructive surgery of the foot. Our physicians have substantial surgical instruction which furnish them the practical experience crucial to conduct surgery on those troubles that are ideally managed through surgical intervention.
Doctors at the Foot Institute also have an extensive practical knowledge and understanding of biomechanics, which is the study of the forces which the feet and legs receive as we walk, run or perform other activities. Learning about biomechanics and gait irregularities makes it possible for a Podiatrist to design shoes and orthotics that can bestow pain relief and protect against many complications which the feet frequently experience.
