Physicians at The Foot Institute – Airdrie specialize in the surgical and medical therapy of the foot and ankle. Our doctors put in an average of ten years in higher education, the first four years in undergrad studies to obtain a Bachelors Degree, and the second four years in Medical School to have a Podiatric Medical Degree. Podiatric Medical School is similar to general medical school and several podiatry programmes are located within these institutions. After obtaining a Podiatric Medial Degree, Podiatrists at the Foot Institute complete a hospital "internship" or post degree residency for another 1 - 3 years.
At the completion of the internship or post degree residency, our Podiatrists have received substantial health care education with an emphasis on concerns regarding the feet and ankles. Our Doctors are trained to treat problems ranging from conventional ailments for instance, ingrown and fungal toe nails, to those which are much more obscure including clubfoot, bunions, or reconstructive surgery of the foot. Our Doctors have substantial surgical education which provide them the expertise vital to perform surgical treatment on those problems that are best handled through surgical treatment.
Doctors at the Foot Institute furthermore have a thorough practical knowledge and understanding of biomechanics, which is the study of the forces which the legs and feet go through as we walk, run or perform other activities. Recognizing biomechanics and gait irregularities empowers a Podiatric physician to develop footwear and orthotics which can give pain relief and help prevent numerous problems which the feet routinely experience.
