Dr.’s here at The Foot Institute – Airdrie specialize in the medical and surgical treatment of the foot and ankle. Our podiatrists spend approximately a decade in learning, the first four years in undergraduate studies to obtain a Bachelors Degree, and the second 4 years in Medical School to have a Podiatric Medical Degree. Podiatric Medical School corresponds to traditional medical school and in fact quite a number podiatry programmes are located within these schools. After achieving a Podiatric Medial Degree, Physicians at the Foot Institute perform a hospital "internship" or residency for yet another one to three years.
Upon the completion of the internship or post degree residency, our Podiatric doctors have received extensive healthcare training with a stress on complications regarding the feet and ankles. Foot Institute Doctors are trained to manage concerns ranging from normal disorders for example, fungal and ingrown toenails, to those which are much more sophisticated for example, clubfoot, bunions, or reconstructive surgery of the foot. Doctors at The Foot Institute have substantial surgical training which provide them the experience necessary to conduct surgical treatment on those troubles that are best treated through surgical treatment.
Foot Institute Doctors furthermore have a thorough expertise and understanding of biomechanics, which is the study of the forces which the legs and feet receive as we walk, run or carry out other activities. Having knowledge of biomechanics and gait irregularities permits a Podiatrist to design footwear and orthotics which can provide pain relief and prevent a large number of complications which the feet normally encounter.
