Podiatrists at The Foot Institute – Airdrie specialise in the medical and surgical therapy of the ankle and foot. Our doctors put in around 10 years in higher education, the first 4 years in undergrad studies to secure a Bachelors Degree, and the next 4 years in Medical School to receive a Podiatric Medical Degree. Podiatric Medical School is similar to standard medical school and in fact several podiatry programmes are located inside these schools. After obtaining a Podiatric Medial Degree, Doctors at the Foot Institute undertake a hospital "internship" or residency for yet another one to three years.
At the completion of the internship or residency, our Podiatric physicians have received significant healthcare instruction with a main focus on issues pertaining to the ankles and feet. They are skilled to care for difficulties ranging from familiar conditions for instance ingrown and fungal toe nails, to those which are far more puzzling for instance, clubfoot, bunions, or reconstructive surgery of the foot. Our Doctors have significant surgical training which give them the practical experience crucial to perform surgery on those complications that are best remedied through surgical intervention.
Doctors at the Foot Institute also have an extensive knowledge and understanding of biomechanics, which is the study of the forces which the legs and feet undergo as we walk, run or carry out other activities. Recognizing biomechanics and gait deviations makes it easy for a Podiatric doctor to design shoes and orthotics that can provide pain relief and prevent many complications which the feet generally experience.
