Dr.’s here at The Foot Institute – Airdrie specialize in the surgical and medical treatment of the ankle and foot. Our podiatrists invest about 10 years in higher education, the first 4 years in undergraduate studies to obtain a Bachelors Degree, and the second 4 years in Medical School to have a Podiatric Medical Degree. Podiatric Medical School corresponds to traditional medical school and in fact several podiatry programmes are located inside these institutions. Upon obtaining a Podiatric Medial Degree, Doctors at the Foot Institute carry out a hospital "internship" or residency for another 1 - 3 years.
At the finalization of the internship or post degree residency, our Podiatric doctors have acquired comprehensive healthcare instruction with an emphasis on problems regarding the feet and ankles. They are instructed to treat issues varying from standard problems for instance, ingrown and fungal toenails, to those which are far more complicated such as clubfoot, bunions, or reconstructive surgery of the foot. Doctors at the Foot Institute have significant surgical training which provide them the prior experience necessary to execute surgical treatment on those concerns that are best treated through surgical intervention.
Our Doctors also have a thorough practical knowledge and understanding of biomechanics, which is the study of the forces which the legs and feet submit to as we walk, run or perform other activities. Realizing biomechanics and gait problems facilitates a Foot doctor to design shoes and orthotics that can give pain relief and minimize the risk of many problems which the feet normally encounter.
