Physicians at The Foot Institute – Red Deer concentrate on the surgical and medical treatment of the ankle and foot. They devote about 10 years in higher education, the first four years in undergraduate studies to attain a Bachelors Degree, and the second 4 years in Medical School to get a Podiatric Medical Degree. Podiatric Medical School resembles conventional medical school and a number of podiatry programmes are contained within these schools. Upon obtaining a Podiatric Medial Degree, Podiatrists at the Foot Institute undertake a hospital "internship" or residency for yet another 1 to 3 years.
Upon the finalization of the internship or residency, our Podiatric physicians have received substantial healthcare training with an emphasis on problems concerning the feet and ankles. Our Doctors are instructed to care for conditions varying from simple afflictions for example, ingrown and fungal toe nails, to those which are far more obscure including clubfoot, bunions, or reconstructive surgery of the foot. Our physicians have significant surgical instruction which supply them the skill necessary to perform surgery on those problems that are ideally remedied through surgical intervention.
Foot Institute Doctors also have a thorough expertise and understanding of biomechanics, which is the study of the forces which the legs and feet go through as we walk, run or perform other activities. Understanding biomechanics and gait irregularities makes it possible for a Podiatric physician to develop footwear and orthotics which can bestow pain relief and protect against a large number of issues which the feet normally experience.
