Doctors at The Foot Institute – Red Deer concentrate on the medical and surgical therapy of the ankle and foot. Our doctors put in approximately 10 years in education, the first 4 years in undergraduate studies to obtain a Bachelors Degree, and the following four years in Medical School to have a Podiatric Medical Degree. Podiatric Medical School corresponds to conventional medical school and in fact many podiatry programs are located within these academic institutions. Upon attaining a Podiatric Medial Degree, Physicians at the Foot Institute perform a hospital "internship" or residency for another 1 - 3 years.
At the completion of the internship or post degree residency, our Podiatric doctors have acquired encompassing healthcare training with a focus on concerns regarding the feet and ankles. They are trained to address issues extending from simple conditions such as fungal and ingrown toe nails, to those which are a lot more intricate including clubfoot, bunions, or reconstructive surgery of the foot. Doctors at The Foot Institute have extensive surgical education which furnish them the experience necessary to conduct surgery on those conditions that are best treated through surgical treatment.
Doctors at the Foot Institute also have a thorough practical knowledge and understanding of biomechanics, which is the study of the forces which the legs and feet undergo as we walk, run or carry out other activities. Recognizing biomechanics and gait abnormalities empowers a Podiatrist to create shoes and orthotics which can bestow pain relief and minimize the risk of a large number of conditions which the feet routinely experience.
