Health professionals at The Foot Institute – Red Deer concentrate on the medical and surgical therapy of the ankle and foot. Our doctors invest an average of ten years in education, the first four years in undergrad studies to obtain a Bachelors Degree, and the 2nd 4 years in Medical School to get a Podiatric Medical Degree. Podiatric Medical School corresponds to regular medical school and in point of fact various podiatry programs lie within these institutions. After obtaining a Podiatric Medial Degree, Doctors at the Foot Institute complete a hospital "internship" or post degree residency for yet another one to three years.
At the completion of the internship or residency, our Podiatrists have received extensive health care training with a focus on problems pertaining to the ankles and feet. They are instructed to care for issues ranging from normal conditions such as fungal and ingrown toe nails, to those which are much more intricate for example, clubfoot, bunions, or reconstructive surgery of the foot. Doctors at The Foot Institute have comprehensive surgical training which give them the experience necessary to conduct surgery on those problems that are ideally treated through surgical intervention.
Doctors at the Foot Institute also have an extensive knowledge and understanding of biomechanics, which is the study of the forces which the feet and legs endure as we walk, run or perform other activities. Realizing biomechanics and gait deviations facilitates a Podiatric physician to design footwear and orthotics which can offer pain relief and avoid a large number of issues which the feet commonly encounter.
