Doctors here at The Foot Institute – Red Deer specialize in the medical and surgical treatment of the ankle and foot. Our podiatrists devote an average of 10 years in higher education, the first 4 years in undergraduate studies to obtain a Bachelors Degree, and the second 4 years in Medical School to attain a Podiatric Medical Degree. Podiatric Medical School is similar to regular medical school and as a matter of fact several podiatry programs lie within these schools. Upon achieving a Podiatric Medial Degree, Doctors at the Foot Institute carry out a hospital "internship" or residency for yet another 1 to 3 years.
At the conclusion of the internship or residency, our Doctors have received substantial medical instruction with an emphasis on issues pertaining to the feet and ankles. They are trained to care for problems varying from normal problems for instance ingrown and fungal toe nails, to those which are even more sophisticated including clubfoot, bunions, or reconstructive surgery of the foot. Doctors at The Foot Institute have comprehensive surgical instruction which supply them the skill necessary to carry out surgical treatment on those issues that are best treated through surgical intervention.
Doctors at the Foot Institute furthermore have a comprehensive practical knowledge and understanding of biomechanics, which is the study of the forces which the feet and legs undergo as we walk, run or perform other tasks. Realizing biomechanics and gait peculiarities permits a Podiatric physician to design shoes and orthotics which can give pain relief and avoid a large number of issues which the feet normally experience.
