Doctors here at The Foot Institute – Grande Prairie specialize in the surgical and medical treatment of the ankle and foot. Our podiatrists devote an average of 10 years in learning, the first 4 years in undergraduate studies to receive a Bachelors Degree, and the second four years in Medical School to get a Podiatric Medical Degree. Podiatric Medical School is similar to typical medical school and as a matter of fact many podiatry training programs lie within these academic institutions. After achieving a Podiatric Medial Degree, Doctors at the Foot Institute undertake a hospital "internship" or post degree residency for an additional one to three years.
At the conclusion of the internship or post degree residency, our Podiatrists have received wide-ranging medical training with a focus on conditions concerning the ankles and feet. They are instructed to deal with concerns varying from general ailments for instance, ingrown and fungal toenails, to those which are even more challenging like clubfoot, bunions, or reconstructive surgery of the foot. Our physicians have comprehensive surgical instruction which provide them the experience necessary to carry out surgical treatment on those complications that are best treated through surgical intervention.
Foot Institute Doctors also have an extensive practical knowledge and understanding of biomechanics, which is the study of the forces which the feet and legs receive as we walk, run or perform other tasks. Understanding biomechanics and gait deviations permits a Podiatric doctor to design shoes and orthotics that can deliver pain relief and help prevent many conditions which the feet routinely encounter.
