Podiatrists at The Foot Institute – Grande Prairie concentrate on the medical and surgical treatment of the ankle and foot. They spend approximately 10 years in learning, the first four years in undergrad studies to obtain a Bachelors Degree, and the following 4 years in Medical School to secure a Podiatric Medical Degree. Podiatric Medical School resembles general medical school and actually several podiatry programmes are located inside these academic institutions. Upon obtaining a Podiatric Medial Degree, Doctors at the Foot Institute perform a hospital "internship" or post degree residency for another one to three years.
At the finalization of the internship or post degree residency, our Podiatric physicians have acquired extensive medical education with a concentration on concerns involving the ankles and feet. Our Doctors are taught to manage complications extending from simple problems for instance, fungal and ingrown toe nails, to those which are much more sophisticated like clubfoot, bunions, or reconstructive surgery of the foot. Our Doctors have extensive surgical instruction which give them the skill needed to execute surgery on those problems that are ideally handled through surgical intervention.
Our Doctors furthermore have a comprehensive expertise and understanding of biomechanics, which is the study of the forces which the legs and feet endure as we walk, run or carry out other activities. Realizing biomechanics and gait irregularities permits a Foot doctor to develop shoes and orthotics which can offer pain relief and minimize the risk of many issues which the feet typically experience.
