Health professionals at The Foot Institute – Airdrie specialize in the surgical and medical treatment of the ankle and foot. They invest an average of 10 years in higher education, the first four years in undergraduate studies to secure a Bachelors Degree, and the next four years in Medical School to obtain a Podiatric Medical Degree. Podiatric Medical School is similar to conventional medical school and many podiatry programs lie inside these academic institutions. Upon securing a Podiatric Medial Degree, Podiatrists at the Foot Institute undertake a hospital "internship" or post degree residency for an additional 1 - 3 years.
Upon the completion of the internship or post degree residency, our Podiatrists have acquired extensive health care training with a main focus on conditions pertaining to the ankles and feet. They are studied to treat concerns ranging from general conditions for instance, ingrown and fungal toenails, to those which are even more challenging including clubfoot, bunions, or reconstructive surgery of the foot. Doctors at The Foot Institute have comprehensive surgical instruction which supply them the experience necessary to execute surgical treatment on those issues that are best treated through surgical intervention.
Our Doctors furthermore have a thorough practical knowledge and understanding of biomechanics, which is the study of the forces which the legs and feet undergo as we walk, run or perform other tasks. Understanding biomechanics and gait problems empowers a Podiatrist to create shoes and orthotics that can give pain relief and protect against many troubles which the feet routinely experience.
