Doctors at The Foot Institute – Airdrie focus on the medical and surgical treatment of the ankle and foot. Our podiatrists invest approximately 10 years in higher education, the first 4 years in undergraduate studies to achieve a Bachelors Degree, and the following four years in Medical School to secure a Podiatric Medical Degree. Podiatric Medical School is similar to general medical school and in fact several podiatry training programs are contained within these schools. After obtaining a Podiatric Medial Degree, Doctors at the Foot Institute carry out a hospital "internship" or residency for another one to three years.
At the completion of the internship or post degree residency, our Podiatrists have gained thorough medical training with an emphasis on difficulties pertaining to the ankles and feet. Our Doctors are trained to treat difficulties extending from typical afflictions for example, fungal and ingrown toe nails, to those which are much more sophisticated for example clubfoot, bunions, or reconstructive surgery of the foot. Our Doctors have considerable surgical instruction which give them the expertise needed to conduct surgery on those problems that are best treated through surgical treatment.
Our Doctors also have a thorough knowledge and understanding of biomechanics, which is the study of the forces which the legs and feet withstand as we walk, run or perform other activities. Learning about biomechanics and gait deviations empowers a Podiatrist to create shoes and orthotics which can give pain relief and prevent numerous problems which the feet regularly experience.
