Physicians at The Foot Institute – Red Deer concentrate on the medical and surgical treatment of the foot and ankle. Our podiatrists spend around a decade in education, the first 4 years in undergrad studies to attain a Bachelors Degree, and the next four years in Medical School to obtain a Podiatric Medical Degree. Podiatric Medical School resembles traditional medical school and in fact quite a number podiatry programs are located inside these academic institutions. After procuring a Podiatric Medial Degree, Doctors at the Foot Institute finish a hospital "internship" or post degree residency for an additional one to three years.
Upon the fulfillment of the internship or post degree residency, our Podiatric physicians have received extensive health care training with an emphasis on issues concerning the feet and ankles. They are studied to address conditions varying from conventional problems for example, fungal and ingrown toe nails, to those which are more complicated for example clubfoot, bunions, or reconstructive surgery of the foot. Doctors at the Foot Institute have substantial surgical instruction which give them the experience necessary to perform surgical treatment on those conditions that are best treated through surgical intervention.
Foot Institute Doctors furthermore have a thorough practical knowledge and understanding of biomechanics, which is the study of the forces which the legs and feet experience as we walk, run or perform other activities. Having knowledge of biomechanics and gait abnormalities allows a Foot doctor to design shoes and orthotics that can provide pain relief and avoid many problems which the feet generally experience.
