Doctors at The Foot Institute – Red Deer provide services for the medical and surgical therapy of the ankle and foot. They spend approximately 10 years in higher education, the first 4 years in undergraduate studies to obtain a Bachelors Degree, and the second 4 years in Medical School to get a Podiatric Medical Degree. Podiatric Medical School is similar to conventional medical school and in fact a number of podiatry programmes are contained inside these academic institutions. After attaining a Podiatric Medial Degree, Physicians at the Foot Institute complete a hospital "internship" or post degree residency for another one to three years.
Upon the completion of the internship or residency, our Foot doctors have received significant health care training with an emphasis on concerns involving the ankles and feet. Foot Institute Doctors are educated to deal with complications ranging from normal problems such as fungal and ingrown toe nails, to those which are even more complex such as clubfoot, bunions, or reconstructive surgery of the foot. Our Doctors have significant surgical education which provide them the practical experience necessary to perform surgical treatment on those problems that are ideally treated through surgical intervention.
Doctors at the Foot Institute additionally have a thorough expertise and understanding of biomechanics, which is the study of the forces which the feet and legs undergo as we walk, run or carry out other tasks. Realizing biomechanics and gait irregularities allows a Podiatrist to design shoes and orthotics that can offer pain relief and defend against countless problems which the feet usually encounter.
