Health professionals at The Foot Institute – Red Deer provide services for the surgical and medical therapy of the ankle and foot. They put in an average of a decade in higher education, the first four years in undergraduate studies to secure a Bachelors Degree, and the next four years in Medical School to have a Podiatric Medical Degree. Podiatric Medical School is similar to conventional medical school and in fact many podiatry programmes are contained within these schools. After obtaining a Podiatric Medial Degree, Doctors at the Foot Institute complete a hospital "internship" or residency for yet another one to three years.
Upon the finalization of the internship or residency, our Podiatrists have gained considerable medical training with a main focus on problems pertaining to the feet and ankles. They are instructed to treat problems ranging from commonplace ailments such as fungal and ingrown toe nails, to those which are more puzzling like clubfoot, bunions, or reconstructive surgery of the foot. Doctors at the Foot Institute have significant surgical training which provide them the prior experience required to perform surgery on those complications that are ideally treated through surgical intervention.
Doctors at the Foot Institute also have a comprehensive expertise and understanding of biomechanics, which is the study of the forces which the feet and legs undergo as we walk, run or perform other activities. Knowing biomechanics and gait peculiarities allows a Podiatrist to design footwear and orthotics which can deliver pain relief and reduce the chances of countless problems which the feet regularly encounter.
