Podiatrists at The Foot Institute – Red Deer concentrate on the surgical and medical therapy of the ankle and foot. They spend about a decade in education, the first four years in undergraduate studies to secure a Bachelors Degree, and the second 4 years in Medical School to obtain a Podiatric Medical Degree. Podiatric Medical School is similar to general medical school and in point of fact various podiatry training programs are located within these schools. After securing a Podiatric Medial Degree, Physicians at the Foot Institute undertake a hospital "internship" or post degree residency for another 1 - 3 years.
Upon the completion of the internship or residency, our Foot doctors have obtained encompassing medical education with an emphasis on difficulties pertaining to the ankles and feet. They are studied to address issues extending from familiar conditions like fungal and ingrown toe nails, to those which are even more sophisticated for example, clubfoot, bunions, or reconstructive surgery of the foot. Our physicians have extensive surgical training which give them the practical experience required to perform surgery on those problems that are best remedied through surgical intervention.
Our Doctors also have a comprehensive knowledge and understanding of biomechanics, which is the study of the forces which the feet and legs receive as we walk, run or carry out other tasks. Having knowledge of biomechanics and gait problems makes it easy for a Podiatric physician to design footwear and orthotics which can deliver pain relief and protect against numerous troubles which the feet usually encounter.
