Podiatrists here at The Foot Institute – Calgary specialize in the medical and surgical treatment of the foot and ankle. Our podiatrists devote an average of a decade in learning, the first four years in undergrad studies to obtain a Bachelors Degree, and the following 4 years in Medical School to obtain a Podiatric Medical Degree. Podiatric Medical School corresponds to conventional medical school and in point of fact many podiatry programs are located within these academic institutions. After attaining a Podiatric Medial Degree, Physicians at the Foot Institute complete a hospital "internship" or residency for another 1 to 3 years.
At the completion of the internship or post degree residency, our Podiatric doctors have gained extensive health care education with an attention to on conditions pertaining to the ankles and feet. Our Doctors are educated to manage conditions extending from typical ailments such as ingrown and fungal toe nails, to those which are more complicated such as clubfoot, bunions, or reconstructive surgery of the foot. Our physicians have significant surgical education which furnish them the expertise essential to perform surgical treatment on those issues that are best managed through surgical intervention.
Foot Institute Doctors additionally have a comprehensive expertise and understanding of biomechanics, which is the study of the forces which the feet and legs withstand as we walk, run or perform other tasks. Recognizing biomechanics and gait deviations empowers a Foot doctor to design shoes and orthotics which can bestow pain relief and defend against many conditions which the feet normally encounter.
