Specialists here at The Foot Institute – Calgary specialise in the medical and surgical therapy of the ankle and foot. Our doctors invest around 10 years in higher education, the first 4 years in undergraduate studies to obtain a Bachelors Degree, and the 2nd 4 years in Medical School to obtain a Podiatric Medical Degree. Podiatric Medical School corresponds to regular medical school and in fact a number of podiatry programmes are contained inside these academic institutions. After attaining a Podiatric Medial Degree, Doctors at the Foot Institute carry out a hospital "internship" or residency for yet another one to three years.
Upon the completion of the internship or residency, our Podiatric doctors have received encompassing health care training with an attention to on problems regarding the ankles and feet. They are studied to address problems ranging from simple problems like ingrown and fungal toe nails, to those which are far more puzzling such as clubfoot, bunions, or reconstructive surgery of the foot. Our physicians have significant surgical education which supply them the experience vital to carry out surgery on those problems that are best treated through surgical intervention.
Foot Institute Doctors also have a thorough practical knowledge and understanding of biomechanics, which is the study of the forces which the feet and legs experience as we walk, run or perform other activities. Learning about biomechanics and gait problems facilitates a Podiatrist to create shoes and orthotics that can deliver pain relief and defend against a large number of troubles which the feet frequently encounter.
