Health professionals at The Foot Institute – Calgary concentrate on the medical and surgical treatment of the foot and ankle. Our podiatrists devote approximately ten years in higher education, the first 4 years in undergraduate studies to receive a Bachelors Degree, and the second four years in Medical School to have a Podiatric Medical Degree. Podiatric Medical School is similar to typical medical school and many podiatry programmes are contained inside these institutions. Upon attaining a Podiatric Medial Degree, Podiatrists at the Foot Institute undertake a hospital "internship" or residency for an additional 1 to 3 years.
At the finalization of the internship or residency, our Doctors have obtained thorough medical training with a main focus on conditions involving the ankles and feet. Foot Institute Doctors are trained to deal with conditions stretching from common disorders for instance, ingrown and fungal toenails, to those which are much more perplexing for instance, clubfoot, bunions, or reconstructive surgery of the foot. Doctors at The Foot Institute have comprehensive surgical training which supply them the prior experience needed to execute surgical treatment on those problems that are best treated through surgical treatment.
Foot Institute Doctors furthermore have an extensive knowledge and understanding of biomechanics, which is the study of the forces which the feet and legs withstand as we walk, run or perform other activities. Learning about biomechanics and gait abnormalities permits a Podiatric physician to create shoes and orthotics that can give pain relief and avoid numerous issues which the feet routinely encounter.
