Physicians at The Foot Institute – Calgary Sunpark specialize in the medical and surgical treatment of the ankle and foot. They spend an average of 10 years in education, the first four years in undergrad studies to obtain a Bachelors Degree, and the following 4 years in Medical School to get a Podiatric Medical Degree. Podiatric Medical School is similar to general medical school and in fact several podiatry programmes are located within these academic institutions. After securing a Podiatric Medial Degree, Doctors at the Foot Institute complete a hospital "internship" or residency for an additional one to three years.
Upon the fulfillment of the internship or residency, our Podiatric doctors have obtained encompassing medical instruction with an emphasis on complications involving the ankles and feet. Our Doctors are studied to address complications stretching from conventional ailments such as fungal and ingrown toenails, to those which are much more intricate for example, clubfoot, bunions, or reconstructive surgery of the foot. Doctors at the Foot Institute have comprehensive surgical training which provide them the experience crucial to perform surgical treatment on those problems that are ideally managed through surgical treatment.
Our Doctors additionally have a comprehensive knowledge and understanding of biomechanics, which is the study of the forces which the legs and feet go through as we walk, run or carry out other activities. Knowing biomechanics and gait deviations permits a Podiatric doctor to develop footwear and orthotics which can deliver pain relief and defend against countless problems which the feet generally encounter.
