Doctors here at The Foot Institute – Red Deer concentrate on the medical and surgical treatment of the ankle and foot. Our podiatrists invest an average of 10 years in learning, the first four years in undergraduate studies to obtain a Bachelors Degree, and the second four years in Medical School to acquire a Podiatric Medical Degree. Podiatric Medical School is similar to standard medical school and as a matter of fact various podiatry programmes lie within these institutions. After attaining a Podiatric Medial Degree, Podiatrists at the Foot Institute finish a hospital "internship" or residency for yet another one to three years.
At the finalization of the internship or post degree residency, our Podiatrists have gained significant health care training with an importance on difficulties regarding the feet and ankles. They are instructed to treat complications extending from general afflictions for instance, ingrown and fungal toe nails, to those which are much more obscure such as clubfoot, bunions, or reconstructive surgery of the foot. Our Doctors have substantial surgical training which furnish them the experience necessary to conduct surgical treatment on those problems that are best handled through surgical treatment.
Our Doctors also have a comprehensive practical knowledge and understanding of biomechanics, which is the study of the forces which the legs and feet undergo as we walk, run or carry out other tasks. Recognizing biomechanics and gait abnormalities empowers a Podiatrist to create shoes and orthotics that can deliver pain relief and help prevent many complications which the feet routinely encounter.
