Doctors at The Foot Institute – Red Deer focus on the medical and surgical therapy of the ankle and foot. They put in about 10 years in higher education, the first four years in undergraduate studies to get a Bachelors Degree, and the second four years in Medical School to attain a Podiatric Medical Degree. Podiatric Medical School corresponds to general medical school and in fact many podiatry training programs are contained inside these institutions. After getting a Podiatric Medial Degree, Doctors at the Foot Institute undertake a hospital "internship" or residency for another 1 to 3 years.
Upon the completion of the internship or residency, our Doctors have received substantial health care instruction with an emphasis on difficulties concerning the ankles and feet. They are instructed to address difficulties ranging from common conditions such as fungal and ingrown toe nails, to those which are much more sophisticated for example, clubfoot, bunions, or reconstructive surgery of the foot. Doctors at The Foot Institute have substantial surgical training which give them the experience necessary to perform surgery on those conditions that are ideally remedied through surgical treatment.
Foot Institute Doctors furthermore have a comprehensive practical knowledge and understanding of biomechanics, which is the study of the forces which the legs and feet endure as we walk, run or perform other activities. Understanding biomechanics and gait problems allows a Podiatrist to design shoes and orthotics that can give pain relief and minimize the risk of many issues which the feet typically encounter.
