Health professionals at The Foot Institute – Red Deer focus on the surgical and medical therapy of the ankle and foot. They spend an average of ten years in education, the first four years in undergraduate studies to achieve a Bachelors Degree, and the following 4 years in Medical School to obtain a Podiatric Medical Degree. Podiatric Medical School corresponds to conventional medical school and in fact various podiatry programmes are located inside these schools. Upon achieving a Podiatric Medial Degree, Physicians at the Foot Institute finish a hospital "internship" or residency for another 1 to 3 years.
Upon the completion of the internship or residency, our Podiatric physicians have received wide-ranging health care training with an attention to on complications regarding the feet and ankles. Our Doctors are skilled to care for problems extending from simple disorders such as fungal and ingrown toe nails, to those which are more obscure for instance, clubfoot, bunions, or reconstructive surgery of the foot. Doctors at The Foot Institute have extensive surgical instruction which give them the experience necessary to perform surgery on those complications that are best treated through surgical intervention.
Foot Institute Doctors also have an extensive practical knowledge and understanding of biomechanics, which is the study of the forces which the legs and feet undergo as we walk, run or carry out other tasks. Recognizing biomechanics and gait deviations permits a Podiatrist to create shoes and orthotics that can offer pain relief and minimize the risk of many problems which the feet typically encounter.
