Podiatrists at The Foot Institute – Red Deer concentrate on the medical and surgical treatment of the ankle and foot. Our doctors put in approximately a decade in higher education, the first four years in undergraduate studies to achieve a Bachelors Degree, and the second 4 years in Medical School to obtain a Podiatric Medical Degree. Podiatric Medical School is similar to general medical school and in fact several podiatry programs are located inside these schools. After securing a Podiatric Medial Degree, Doctors at the Foot Institute complete a hospital "internship" or residency for another one to three years.
At the completion of the internship or post degree residency, our Podiatrists have received considerable medical training with a main focus on problems pertaining to the feet and ankles. They are taught to treat conditions stretching from familiar conditions for example, ingrown and fungal toe nails, to those which are a lot more obscure like clubfoot, bunions, or reconstructive surgery of the foot. Doctors at The Foot Institute have substantial surgical education which provide them the practical experience needed to conduct surgical treatment on those problems that are ideally managed through surgical treatment.
Our Doctors additionally have a comprehensive expertise and understanding of biomechanics, which is the study of the forces which the feet and legs go through as we walk, run or perform other activities. Knowing biomechanics and gait irregularities empowers a Podiatric physician to design shoes and orthotics which can provide pain relief and help prevent many complications which the feet normally encounter.
