Doctors at The Foot Institute – Red Deer specialize in the medical and surgical treatment of the foot and ankle. They spend approximately 10 years in higher education, the first four years in undergraduate studies to obtain a Bachelors Degree, and the second 4 years in Medical School to get a Podiatric Medical Degree. Podiatric Medical School is similar to typical medical school and a number of podiatry training programs are located within these schools. Upon procuring a Podiatric Medial Degree, Podiatrists at the Foot Institute complete a hospital "internship" or residency for yet another one to three years.
At the completion of the internship or residency, our Doctors have received extensive healthcare instruction with an importance on concerns involving the ankles and feet. They are taught to address concerns stretching from usual conditions for instance, fungal and ingrown toenails, to those which are far more complicated including clubfoot, bunions, or reconstructive surgery of the foot. Doctors at the Foot Institute have considerable surgical education which furnish them the experience required to conduct surgical treatment on those concerns that are ideally treated through surgical intervention.
Our Doctors furthermore have an extensive practical knowledge and understanding of biomechanics, which is the study of the forces which the legs and feet experience as we walk, run or perform other activities. Recognizing biomechanics and gait abnormalities allows a Foot doctor to create footwear and orthotics that can give pain relief and protect against many conditions which the feet regularly experience.
