Health professionals at The Foot Institute – Red Deer specialize in the medical and surgical treatment of the ankle and foot. Our doctors spend approximately 10 years in higher education, the first four years in undergraduate studies to attain a Bachelors Degree, and the 2nd 4 years in Medical School to obtain a Podiatric Medical Degree. Podiatric Medical School is similar to general medical school and in fact several podiatry programs are contained within these institutions. After attaining a Podiatric Medial Degree, Podiatrists at the Foot Institute perform a hospital "internship" or residency for yet another 1 - 3 years.
At the conclusion of the internship or residency, our Podiatric physicians have received substantial medical training with an importance on conditions concerning the feet and ankles. Foot Institute Doctors are educated to deal with problems varying from conventional ailments such as fungal and ingrown toenails, to those which are much more sophisticated for instance, clubfoot, bunions, or reconstructive surgery of the foot. Doctors at the Foot Institute have comprehensive surgical training which furnish them the expertise required to carry out surgical treatment on those problems that are best remedied through surgical intervention.
Doctors at the Foot Institute also have an extensive expertise and understanding of biomechanics, which is the study of the forces which the legs and feet withstand as we walk, run or perform other activities. Learning about biomechanics and gait problems permits a Podiatrist to design footwear and orthotics which can offer pain relief and reduce the chances of many problems which the feet typically experience.
