Dr.’s here at The Foot Institute – Grande Prairie concentrate on the medical and surgical treatment of the foot and ankle. They spend around 10 years in higher education, the first 4 years in undergraduate studies to achieve a Bachelors Degree, and the second 4 years in Medical School to attain a Podiatric Medical Degree. Podiatric Medical School is similar to conventional medical school and various podiatry training programs are contained inside these institutions. After obtaining a Podiatric Medial Degree, Doctors at the Foot Institute undertake a hospital "internship" or residency for another 1 to 3 years.
At the fulfillment of the internship or residency, our Podiatric physicians have received significant medical instruction with a main focus on complications regarding the feet and ankles. Our Doctors are educated to manage problems ranging from normal afflictions for example, fungal and ingrown toenails, to those which are far more complex for example, clubfoot, bunions, or reconstructive surgery of the foot. Our Doctors have extensive surgical instruction which supply them the practical experience essential to execute surgical treatment on those problems that are best remedied through surgical treatment.
Our Doctors also have a thorough knowledge and understanding of biomechanics, which is the study of the forces which the feet and legs undergo as we walk, run or perform other tasks. Having knowledge of biomechanics and gait peculiarities facilitates a Podiatric physician to design shoes and orthotics that can bestow pain relief and defend against many problems which the feet generally encounter.
