Doctors at The Foot Institute – Airdrie focus on the medical and surgical treatment of the ankle and foot. Foot Institute Podiatrists put in approximately ten years in learning, the first four years in undergraduate studies to attain a Bachelors Degree, and the second four years in Medical School to receive a Podiatric Medical Degree. Podiatric Medical School is similar to conventional medical school and as a matter of fact various podiatry programs are located inside these institutions. After obtaining a Podiatric Medial Degree, Doctors at the Foot Institute perform a hospital "internship" or post degree residency for an additional 1 to 3 years.
Upon the finalization of the internship or residency, our Podiatric physicians have received considerable medical education with a stress on issues pertaining to the ankles and feet. Our Doctors are skilled to manage conditions varying from normal disorders such as ingrown and fungal toe nails, to those which are much more sophisticated for example, clubfoot, bunions, or reconstructive surgery of the foot. Our physicians have extensive surgical training which give them the prior experience required to perform surgery on those troubles that are best treated through surgical treatment.
Foot Institute Doctors also have a thorough practical knowledge and understanding of biomechanics, which is the study of the forces which the legs and feet withstand as we walk, run or perform other tasks. Learning about biomechanics and gait abnormalities permits a Podiatrist to create shoes and orthotics that can give pain relief and protect against a large number of troubles which the feet routinely encounter.
