Medical professionals at The Foot Institute – Airdrie specialise in the surgical and medical treatment of the ankle and foot. Our podiatrists invest an average of ten years in learning, the first four years in undergraduate studies to obtain a Bachelors Degree, and the next 4 years in Medical School to receive a Podiatric Medical Degree. Podiatric Medical School is similar to typical medical school and actually many podiatry programmes are contained within these institutions. After achieving a Podiatric Medial Degree, Doctors at the Foot Institute complete a hospital "internship" or post degree residency for yet another one to three years.
At the completion of the internship or post degree residency, our Podiatric doctors have received extensive healthcare training with a main focus on complications involving the feet and ankles. Our Doctors are trained to handle difficulties ranging from conventional problems for instance fungal and ingrown toe nails, to those which are far more complicated including clubfoot, bunions, or reconstructive surgery of the foot. Our physicians have substantial surgical training which supply them the experience necessary to carry out surgery on those problems that are ideally treated through surgical intervention.
Our Doctors also have a thorough expertise and understanding of biomechanics, which is the study of the forces which the feet and legs endure as we walk, run or carry out other tasks. Having knowledge of biomechanics and gait deviations permits a Podiatrist to design footwear and orthotics that can offer pain relief and help prevent many complications which the feet routinely encounter.
