Physicians here at The Foot Institute – Airdrie concentrate on the medical and surgical treatment of the ankle and foot. Our podiatrists invest an average of 10 years in education, the first 4 years in undergraduate studies to attain a Bachelors Degree, and the second four years in Medical School to have a Podiatric Medical Degree. Podiatric Medical School is similar to conventional medical school and in fact a number of podiatry training programs are located inside these institutions. After procuring a Podiatric Medial Degree, Doctors at the Foot Institute finish a hospital "internship" or post degree residency for another 1 - 3 years.
At the completion of the internship or residency, our Foot doctors have received encompassing health care training with an emphasis on issues concerning the ankles and feet. Our Doctors are instructed to handle difficulties varying from common conditions for instance, ingrown and fungal toenails, to those which are even more obscure for example, clubfoot, bunions, or reconstructive surgery of the foot. Our Doctors have extensive surgical instruction which provide them the experience crucial to conduct surgical treatment on those problems that are best handled through surgical intervention.
Foot Institute Doctors furthermore have a thorough practical knowledge and understanding of biomechanics, which is the study of the forces which the feet and legs undergo as we walk, run or carry out other activities. Understanding biomechanics and gait deviations facilitates a Podiatrist to design shoes and orthotics that can bestow pain relief and minimize the risk of many issues which the feet typically encounter.
