Doctors at The Foot Institute – Airdrie concentrate on the medical and surgical therapy of the ankle and foot. Our podiatrists spend approximately 10 years in higher education, the first four years in undergraduate studies to secure a Bachelors Degree, and the following 4 years in Medical School to obtain a Podiatric Medical Degree. Podiatric Medical School is similar to conventional medical school and numerous podiatry training programs are located inside these academic institutions. After acquiring a Podiatric Medial Degree, Doctors at the Foot Institute carry out a hospital "internship" or post degree residency for another one to three years.
At the completion of the internship or post degree residency, our Podiatrists have received extensive medical training with an emphasis on problems concerning the ankles and feet. Foot Institute Doctors are instructed to manage conditions varying from normal conditions for instance fungal and ingrown toe nails, to those which are much more complex such as clubfoot, bunions, or reconstructive surgery of the foot. Doctors at the Foot Institute have substantial surgical training which give them the experience crucial to perform surgery on those problems that are ideally remedied through surgical intervention.
Our Doctors also have an extensive knowledge and understanding of biomechanics, which is the study of the forces which the feet and legs receive as we walk, run or perform other activities. Having knowledge of biomechanics and gait abnormalities facilitates a Podiatrist to design footwear and orthotics which can deliver pain relief and defend against many issues which the feet generally experience.
