Specialists here at The Foot Institute – Airdrie provide services for the medical and surgical therapy of the ankle and foot. Our doctors devote approximately 10 years in higher education, the first 4 years in undergraduate studies to obtain a Bachelors Degree, and the second 4 years in Medical School to have a Podiatric Medical Degree. Podiatric Medical School resembles traditional medical school and in fact several podiatry training programs lie within these academic institutions. After obtaining a Podiatric Medial Degree, Doctors at the Foot Institute complete a hospital "internship" or post degree residency for another one to three years.
At the conclusion of the internship or residency, our Podiatrists have acquired considerable health care training with a main focus on difficulties pertaining to the feet and ankles. Our Doctors are instructed to treat problems stretching from usual conditions like fungal and ingrown toenails, to those which are even more perplexing such as clubfoot, bunions, or reconstructive surgery of the foot. Doctors at the Foot Institute have thorough surgical instruction which give them the expertise required to perform surgery on those problems that are ideally managed through surgical treatment.
Doctors at the Foot Institute likewise have a thorough expertise and understanding of biomechanics, which is the study of the forces which the feet and legs withstand as we walk, run or perform other activities. Recognizing biomechanics and gait deviations enables a Podiatrist to create shoes and orthotics that can provide pain relief and protect against many conditions which the feet routinely encounter.
