Physicians at The Foot Institute – Red Deer specialise in the surgical and medical therapy of the ankle and foot. Our doctors invest about 10 years in higher education, the first four years in undergraduate studies to obtain a Bachelors Degree, and the following 4 years in Medical School to receive a Podiatric Medical Degree. Podiatric Medical School is similar to general medical school and in fact several podiatry programs are located within these schools. Upon securing a Podiatric Medial Degree, Doctors at the Foot Institute perform a hospital "internship" or residency for yet another 1 to 3 years.
At the fulfillment of the internship or residency, our Foot doctors have received significant healthcare training with a focus on difficulties involving the ankles and feet. Our Doctors are educated to manage complications extending from general conditions such as fungal and ingrown toenails, to those which are far more complex such as clubfoot, bunions, or reconstructive surgery of the foot. Doctors at The Foot Institute have substantial surgical training which provide them the practical experience vital to execute surgery on those issues that are best handled through surgical treatment.
Foot Institute Doctors furthermore have a comprehensive expertise and understanding of biomechanics, which is the study of the forces which the legs and feet submit to as we walk, run or perform other activities. Understanding biomechanics and gait irregularities allows a Podiatrist to develop shoes and orthotics that can bestow pain relief and minimize the risk of a large number of conditions which the feet routinely encounter.
