Doctors at The Foot Institute – Red Deer focus on the medical and surgical therapy of the foot and ankle. Our doctors devote an average of 10 years in learning, the first four years in undergraduate studies to get a Bachelors Degree, and the following 4 years in Medical School to have a Podiatric Medical Degree. Podiatric Medical School is similar to usual medical school and in fact quite a number podiatry training programs are contained within these institutions. After securing a Podiatric Medial Degree, Doctors at the Foot Institute perform a hospital "internship" or residency for another 1 - 3 years.
At the completion of the internship or residency, our Podiatrists have gained considerable medical training with a main focus on complications pertaining to the feet and ankles. Our Doctors are taught to care for concerns varying from common problems for example, ingrown and fungal toe nails, to those which are much more puzzling including clubfoot, bunions, or reconstructive surgery of the foot. Our Doctors have thorough surgical training which provide them the experience crucial to execute surgical treatment on those concerns that are ideally treated through surgical intervention.
Our Doctors also have a thorough practical knowledge and understanding of biomechanics, which is the study of the forces which the feet and legs submit to as we walk, run or perform other tasks. Understanding biomechanics and gait peculiarities permits a Podiatrist to design shoes and orthotics which can offer pain relief and avoid many problems which the feet commonly encounter.
