Physicians at The Foot Institute – Red Deer specialize in the surgical and medical therapy of the foot and ankle. They spend approximately ten years in higher education, the first four years in undergrad studies to receive a Bachelors Degree, and the 2nd 4 years in Medical School to obtain a Podiatric Medical Degree. Podiatric Medical School corresponds to standard medical school and in reality several podiatry programs are contained within these schools. After obtaining a Podiatric Medial Degree, Doctors at the Foot Institute complete a hospital "internship" or post degree residency for another 1 to 3 years.
Upon the completion of the internship or post degree residency, our Podiatric physicians have received wide-ranging medical training with an emphasis on issues concerning the feet and ankles. Foot Institute Doctors are taught to address issues ranging from regular afflictions for example, fungal and ingrown toenails, to those which are more puzzling for instance, clubfoot, bunions, or reconstructive surgery of the foot. Doctors at the Foot Institute have significant surgical training which give them the practical experience required to perform surgical treatment on those problems that are ideally handled through surgical treatment.
Doctors at the Foot Institute additionally have an extensive expertise and understanding of biomechanics, which is the study of the forces which the legs and feet endure as we walk, run or perform other activities. Understanding biomechanics and gait abnormalities allows a Podiatric doctor to design shoes and orthotics which can deliver pain relief and defend against many problems which the feet regularly encounter.
