Health professionals at The Foot Institute – Red Deer specialize in the medical and surgical treatment of the ankle and foot. Our doctors spend around 10 years in learning, the first four years in undergraduate studies to get a Bachelors Degree, and the second 4 years in Medical School to attain a Podiatric Medical Degree. Podiatric Medical School is similar to typical medical school and in fact several podiatry training programs are located inside these academic institutions. Upon achieving a Podiatric Medial Degree, Doctors at the Foot Institute perform a hospital "internship" or residency for an additional one to three years.
At the finalization of the internship or residency, our Doctors have acquired extensive medical training with a focus on conditions pertaining to the ankles and feet. Our Doctors are trained to treat problems ranging from general ailments such as fungal and ingrown toe nails, to those which are a lot more obscure such as clubfoot, bunions, or reconstructive surgery of the foot. Our Doctors have considerable surgical instruction which furnish them the practical experience necessary to perform surgical treatment on those issues that are ideally treated through surgical intervention.
Our Doctors also have a thorough expertise and understanding of biomechanics, which is the study of the forces which the legs and feet receive as we walk, run or perform other activities. Learning about biomechanics and gait irregularities permits a Podiatrist to design shoes and orthotics which can offer pain relief and reduce the chances of countless complications which the feet typically experience.
