Podiatrists here at The Foot Institute – Airdrie concentrate on the surgical and medical treatment of the foot and ankle. Our doctors put in about ten years in higher education, the first four years in undergraduate studies to attain a Bachelors Degree, and the 2nd 4 years in Medical School to receive a Podiatric Medical Degree. Podiatric Medical School corresponds to conventional medical school and in fact a number of podiatry programs are contained within these institutions. Upon procuring a Podiatric Medial Degree, Doctors at the Foot Institute carry out a hospital "internship" or post degree residency for an additional one to three years.
At the completion of the internship or residency, our Doctors have acquired wide-ranging health care training with an emphasis on conditions involving the feet and ankles. They are studied to treat complications ranging from basic conditions for example, fungal and ingrown toe nails, to those which are much more challenging for example clubfoot, bunions, or reconstructive surgery of the foot. Our physicians have thorough surgical training which furnish them the prior experience necessary to perform surgical treatment on those concerns that are best treated through surgical intervention.
Our Doctors likewise have a thorough expertise and understanding of biomechanics, which is the study of the forces which the feet and legs receive as we walk, run or perform other activities. Knowing biomechanics and gait irregularities empowers a Podiatric doctor to design shoes and orthotics which can give pain relief and defend against countless conditions which the feet regularly encounter.
