Physicians at The Foot Institute – Airdrie specialize in the medical and surgical treatment of the ankle and foot. Foot Institute Doctors put in around ten years in learning, the first four years in undergraduate studies to obtain a Bachelors Degree, and the next 4 years in Medical School to acquire a Podiatric Medical Degree. Podiatric Medical School is similar to regular medical school and as a matter of fact several podiatry training programs are located inside these institutions. Upon obtaining a Podiatric Medial Degree, Physicians at the Foot Institute perform a hospital "internship" or residency for another one to three years.
Upon the completion of the internship or residency, our Podiatric doctors have received significant medical training with a focus on problems concerning the ankles and feet. They are instructed to address conditions ranging from commonplace ailments for example, fungal and ingrown toe nails, to those which are even more sophisticated such as clubfoot, bunions, or reconstructive surgery of the foot. Our Doctors have substantial surgical training which furnish them the experience essential to perform surgical treatment on those problems that are best managed through surgical treatment.
Our Doctors also have a comprehensive practical knowledge and understanding of biomechanics, which is the study of the forces which the feet and legs experience as we walk, run or perform other activities. Knowing biomechanics and gait abnormalities enables a Podiatrist to create shoes and orthotics which can offer pain relief and reduce the chances of many troubles which the feet commonly encounter.
